Pocket Ponderings – (noun). a thought so small you can keep it in your pocket and take it everywhere with you.
Despite what the memes are claiming, it looks like the two popes don’t care who wins the world cup.
Photo from Fox News Latino.
And it looks like god doesn’t care either.
This is how much god doesn’t care:
On July 8th, god ignored the collective prayers of more than 180 million Brazilian fans as the 2014 World Cup hosts watched their Selecao get demolished by the visiting Mannschaft.
On the flipside, this is how much god cares:
On July 8th, god answered the prayers of more than 46 million German fans as they watched their Mannschaft outclass the 2014 World Cup host’s Selecao.
And this is why prayer will always work. Here’s how:
If you get what you prayed for, it worked.
If you don’t get what your prayed for, god want’s something better for you; or he doesn’t want you to get it yet, but you will get it really soon; or it’s because he doesn’t take sides.
Prayer will always work because to those who believe, it works even when it really doesn’t.
Hence, the neutrality of the two popes. If Benedict openly expresses his support for his country’s team and Benedict does the same, they will have shown the world that god takes sides by the time this World Cup’s champions are handed their trophy.
As neutral spectator, I have no prayers. However, I do wish for the following things:
That’s it for now. Remember: Use your head and SPREAD THE RED!
Nike Football – Winner Stays featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Wayne Rooney, Andrea Pirlo, Andrés Iniesta, Thiago Silva, Eden Hazard, Mario Götze, Gonzalo Higuaín, Gerard Piqué, David Luiz, Tim Howard & Thibaut Courtois
This is now officially my favorite commercial of all time!
What is wrong with this picture?
a. Manchester United is not in the top four.
b. Liverpool is at the top of the table.
I never thought I’d live to see the day when it’s the closing matches of the season and the banner flying at the top of the table is Scouser Red. I get a migraine just imagining Steven Gerrard lifting the Premier League trophy.
Oh, the horror!
Well, I’m an atheist, which means I am nothing if not realistic. Only the deluded would hope to see the black and red ribbons of Manchester on the trophy at the end of this season. Still, Liverpool can’t get too comfortable with Mourinho’s Chelsea trailing them only two points.
Don’t fail me now, Mou!
For now, here’s a poem dedicated to Liverpool fans:
We’ll get our trophy back next season.
The Red Devils always do.
Meanwhile there is good reason,
for now, to be a Blue.
Let’s talk about football.
I believe that Wayne Rooney is the greatest footballer in the history of the sport.
I believe that Manchester United is the best football club in the world.
I’m pretty sure Jose Mourinho and Chelsea‘s 25,705,063 Facebook fans will have a thing or two to say about my beliefs; but the great thing about living in a democracy is we’re all free to believe whatever we want. Manchester United is the best; I believe that and you can’t take that away from me. When I have chosen to believe in something, I can be pretty stubborn about it.
You might think I’m crazy (or stupid) for believing that Wayne Rooney is the best. There maybe lots of reasons, and some of them are probably good ones, why Wayne Rooney isn’t the best. Well, when it comes to believing in something, maybe I’m like most people.
There are people who believe that the Earth is less than 10,000 years old, even though there is overwhelming scientific evidence that the Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old. Isn’t democracy great!
There are people who believe that a loving, forgiving god exists and that this god will help Liverpool win the title this season if they pray hard enough, even though there is no evidence that such a god exists. If you are such a person, I completely support your right to believe this.
I’m a Manchester United fan. If you’re not, that’s cool. If you’re a fan of a rival club, that’s even cooler – it means we probably share the same passion for the beautiful sport of football. If you want to know more about the club that I believe to be the best, I’d be happy to talk about my reasons (or biases) with you. If you think Arsenal, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy or the Azkals is the best football club in the world and you want to share your reasons (or biases) with me, I’d be happy to listen and you can be sure I will never try to convince you otherwise.
I know Manchester United is currently 7th in the league table with 51 points and Chelsea is currently at the top with 69 points. But I believe Manchester United is better than Chelsea. Why? Because I believe it. You don’t have to believe it. You’re welcome to believe whatever you want.
I only ask that you give me the same courtesy. For example, if you believe that Barcelona is the best football club in the world and that he died on the cross for me because I keep offending him with my sins, please don’t force your belief on me and act as if you are doing me a kindness. Thank you.
