In this series, we examine the arguments of Brother Eliseo Soriano, the Presiding Minister of Members Church of God International (MCGI) and one of the most prominent televangelists in the Philippines today. He is popularly known as Bro. Eli. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the fallacy of Brother Eli Soriano.
Episode 2: Earthquakes and God
On October 17th last year, our charming preacher told his kapatweets*…
To those who don’t speak my beloved Filipino, he said, “Earthquakes are a manifestation of the anger of god. Job 9:5-6”
Let’s take a look at what his reference says.
He who removes mountains, and they know it not, when he overturns them in his anger, who shakes the Earth out of its place, and its pillars tremble…
Clearly, this guy is preaching ignorance. I hope those 105 people who retweeted and those 63 people who starred Bro. Eli’s message did so to show their friends that, although Bro. Eli may occasionally say something that contains some hidden sense, he most of the time preaches pseudoscience from a book that is clearly not a good source of scientific understanding.
I mean, seriously, if you believe that earthquakes happen when your god is having a fit, then you should really rethink your reasons for worshiping him. Here’s why:

Wow! God must be really mad at the Chinese, huh? Or at mankind entirely! Last year alone, close to 1,500 people – men, women, children – died possibly horrific and excruciating deaths in earthquakes all over the world.
If earthquakes really are god’s tantrums, he must be a really angry god.

Five million detectable earthquakes and approximately 13,000 deaths every year – Bro. Eli, is this what you mean when you said earthquakes are the terrible moments when god slams his gentle fist on his desk?
That’s it for now, folks! Remember; use your head and spread the Red!
- kapatweet is a rather clever portmanteau of the words kapatid (Tagalog word for brother or sister) and tweet. His kapatweets, I assume, are his brothers and sisters in faith and on Twitter.
